Headspace Coach – Straight Up
Mental health is health. It shapes how you think, feel, and respond to the world around you. Your mood, motivation, focus, relationships, and resilience all fall under mental wellbeing — and when these are out of balance, stress feels heavier, energy drops, and everyday challenges can start to feel overwhelming. Taking care of your mental health is a key part of feeling and performing at your best.
For many men, signs of struggle go unnoticed or unspoken. Stress, low mood, anxiety, or burnout often get dismissed as “just being tired” or “a rough patch.” But when these feelings persist, they affect more than your mindset — they spill into work, relationships, physical health, and confidence. Taking them seriously is the first step toward change.
Mental wellbeing influences sleep, hormones, energy, sex drive, weight, and even long-term heart health. Ignoring it can make things worse, but support makes recovery possible. In New Zealand, 1 in 5 men report poor wellbeing and 1 in 8 will face serious depression in their lifetime. Seeking help is not weakness — it’s strength. With the right tools and guidance, you can reset balance and thrive again.

Signs and Symptoms – When to Get Checked
Mental health challenges can show up in different ways, and often more quietly than expected. It might feel like constant fatigue, a “flat” mood, or a loss of motivation. For some, it’s persistent stress or worry that never seems to switch off. Others notice irritability, anger, mood swings, or losing interest in things that once mattered — whether hobbies, work, or relationships.
Sleep often takes a hit too, with nights spent restless or mornings where it’s hard to get out of bed. Some men turn to alcohol, drugs, or gambling as a way to cope, which can mask the problem but make recovery harder in the long run. Recognising these signs early matters, because change gets easier the sooner you act.
There are also times when urgent help is needed. Severe low mood, thoughts of self-harm, panic attacks, overwhelming anxiety, or sudden risky behaviour are red flags. In those moments, reaching out quickly isn’t weakness — it’s lifesaving.
