Hair loss is one of the most common concerns tāne (men) bring up in clinic. Whether it’s a thinning crown or a receding hairline, it can chip away at confidence. The good news? There are proven treatments that work — and plenty of myths that can be left behind.

Why Hair Loss Happens

Most hair loss in Kiwi men comes down to androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). It’s genetic, driven by sensitivity to a hormone called DHT (a by-product of testosterone). Other contributors include stress, poor nutrition, and certain medical conditions.

Treatment Options That Work

Finasteride and Dutasteride

Blocks DHT and slows or stops hair loss. Some men even see regrowth. It’s available in New Zealand by prescription, though it needs proper monitoring — I’ve seen men order it online without advice, which can cause issues.

Minoxidil

A topical treatment that stimulates follicles and improves blood flow. Available over the counter in NZ as foam or liquid. Works best when used consistently.

Combination Therapy

Using finasteride and minoxidil together gives the best results for most men. Research backs this up — and in my experience, the combination keeps hair stronger for longer.

Myths to Ignore

  • Supplements alone won’t stop hair loss. Biotin and vitamins may support general hair health but don’t block DHT.

  • Shampoos aren’t cures. Thickening shampoos help appearance, not the underlying cause.

  • “It’s too late.” Even men with significant thinning can slow further loss with treatment.

When to Get Checked

If hair loss is sudden, patchy, or linked to other symptoms (like fatigue or weight changes), a GP visit is important to rule out other causes.
