STI Check – Straight Up

STIs are more common than most men realise. They can spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex — and some, like herpes or HPV, through skin contact. Rates of syphilis and gonorrhoea are rising in New Zealand, and many infections cause no symptoms. You or your partner could be affected without knowing — which is why regular checks matter.

The most common STIs in New Zealand are chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, HIV, and HPV. Untreated, they can cause infertility, pelvic or testicular pain, erectile dysfunction, or more serious long-term health risks. They also increase the chance of catching or passing on other infections. Testing helps detect problems early, protects partners, and gives you peace of mind.

The good news? Testing is quick, simple, and completely confidential. Most infections can be treated effectively, and even those that can’t be cured can be safely managed with modern, evidence-based care — helping you stay healthy, confident, and in control.

Signs and Symptoms – When to Get Checked

STIs can show up in different ways. Common signs include pain or burning when peeing, unusual discharge, sores, rashes, or swelling around the genitals. But here’s the key: many STIs cause no symptoms. You could feel fine and still have an infection — or pass it to a partner. That’s why regular checks matter if you’re sexually active.

Even without symptoms, testing protects your health and relationships. A quick urine test, swab, or blood sample gives clarity and peace of mind. Left untreated, STIs can cause infertility, erectile dysfunction, or long-term pain. Early detection makes treatment easier and reduces risk to partners.

Seek medical help if you develop severe testicular pain or swelling, painful sores that worsen quickly, fever, chills, or feel unwell after new sexual contact. These may signal a serious infection needing urgent care. Also seek help if you notice blood in your urine, painful discharge, or sudden groin swelling. Acting early protects your health and your partner’s.
