Sleep Issues – Straight Up

Sleep isn’t just rest—it’s when your body resets, repairs, and prepares for the day ahead. During deep, restorative sleep, hormones rebalance, muscles recover, and the brain processes memories while clearing stress and toxins. Quality sleep is a cornerstone of long-term health, supporting everything from energy, focus, and mood to metabolism, immune strength, and performance.

Insomnia and sleep disorders go far beyond the occasional rough night. They include difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early and feeling unrefreshed. Other conditions such as sleep apnoea, restless legs, or disrupted body clocks can make recovery harder. Over time, poor sleep chips away at both health and resilience.

Sleep issues affect nearly every system in the body. They’re linked to low testosterone, depression, anxiety, weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Around one in three New Zealand men experience insomnia or disrupted sleep, yet many go untreated. The good news? With the right plan and support, better sleep is achievable—restoring clarity, confidence, and daily performance.

Signs and Symptoms – When to Get Checked

You may have a sleep problem if you struggle to fall asleep most nights, wake up frequently during the night, or wake up too early and can’t get back to sleep. Feeling unrefreshed despite spending enough time in bed, snoring, gasping, or choking during sleep are also warning signs. During the day, you might notice constant fatigue, brain fog, irritability, low mood, or anxiety that seem linked to poor sleep.

Seek urgent medical help if you experience loud snoring with pauses in breathing (which could indicate sleep apnoea), severe mood changes, depression, or thoughts of self-harm, or sudden excessive sleepiness that puts you at risk while driving or at work.

Early assessment can help identify the cause, protect your health, and guide you toward effective treatment options so you can get your sleep back on track.
